2019-20 Avon vs Martinsville Recap & Photo Gallery

The host Avon Orioles got out to a quick lead, with a 10-3 advantage after one. Avon kept that 2-3 possession lead on the Artesians throughout the first three frames, leading at the break 22-16 and 28-24 after three quarters. Avon found it difficult to find the bottom of the basket from both the field and free throw line in the fourth. Martinsville picked the perfect time to take their first lead of the game, taking advantage of a miss on the front end of a 1-1 they would score with 15 seconds remaining taking a 33-32 lead. The Orioles would get two more opportunities including a clean look from 19’ at the buzzer, which would hit off the back of the iron, and Martinsville came away with a hard fought 34-32 road victory. Leading the attack and applying the offensive pressure for Martinsville was junior Pa’Shence Walker with 13 points, while senior Paige Dorsett battled in the frontcourt throughout the evening finishing with 9 points. Sophomore Ashylnn Traylor, 5 points, played physical and attacked the Orioles on both ends, while fellow sophomore Delaney Wolfe played a solid backcourt role throughout the contest. The Orioles were only able to muster ten second half points and only four of those in the fourth quarter. Avon was led by junior guard Indiah Kendrick with 8 points and senior Haley Nichols (Tennessee Martin commit) with 8 points. Junior Alex Richard (Butler commit) was active and physical around the basket on both ends finishing with 7 points, along with several rebounds and blocks. Junior Genesis Castro played a steady floor game for the host as well.

Martinsville (1-0) will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Indian Creek (0-0) Saturday night. Avon (0-1) will get back at it Tuesday when they host Pike (1-0).
