Always a treat to see how the elites of the incoming freshman class represent at AIS against their older high school peers. Although we lost a couple registered participants to injury and a national event prior to the showcase, the 2030 class was still packed with talent this year and they did not disappoint. While we could deservingly highlight all fifteen prospects that were in attendance, we will mention eight that we thought shined during our views of their play during the event.
Brooklyn Bizila 2030 / 6’0 / SF / HSE
Brooklyn was the only frosh that was selected to the All-Showcase team with an extremely productive and consistent showing throughout the day. She both put up one of the top scores of the event with a 24-point effort but also averaged 16.3 PPG across three contests. She has a long strong high school ready frame, is a solid athlete with backcourt skills. She shows the ability to get buckets in a variety of ways, including knocking down the three. She can rebound against forwards and provides a lot of versatility on both ends with her size, agility and skill. Some similarities to just graduated HSE standout Kayla Stidham. Expect to see her in the box score right away for the Royals this winter.
Liv DeFauw 2030 / 5’10 / SG / Penn
Liv had a great showing at our Futures camp last year and once again proved herself against elite competition in an up and down fast paced environment on Sunday. She has nice length, strong guard frame, physicality and instincts to compliment her backcourt skillset. She can handle the ball as needed, is fluid and crafty on the attack and can knock down the three ball in bunches. Penn brings back an experienced and talented core of players but I’m sure with the combination of size and skill from the guard spot Liv will make an impact early on for the Kingsmen.
Tatum Eberly 2030 / 5’5 / PG / Fishers
Tatum is one of the top true PG in the class and plays with skill and maturity beyond her years. She can handle against pressure, sees the floor well on the move and creates space and opportunity for herself and teammates. High level instincts, crafty playmaking skill and can score the ball, as shown with a 20-point game. Reminds you bit of Mt Vernon junior standout point guard Zoey Woods. Balanced dynamic play with the ability to consistently knock down shoots, controls pace/tempo and setup teammates repeatedly. Would expect she will be in the varsity rotation mix from the start for the 4A Tigers.
Journie Johnson 2030 / 5’10 / SG / Carmel
Journie is one of the more dynamic scorers in the class with the ability to get buckets at all levels in a variety of ways. Strong frame, physical athletic game to the basket and can knock down shots out to the three-point line. Skilled playmaking ability and is confident and aggressive in her approach for a youngster. While Carmel is deep in backcourt talent, expect her to still make an impact from day one for the Greyhounds
Adalyn Nicely 2030 / 5’6 / PG / Western Boone
We saw Adalyn several times over the spring/summer and noted her skilled athletic play from the guard spot. She can operate from the point where she is smooth and crafty on the attack, plays with high level instincts and is a solid athlete in all aspects of her game. She was confident and productive throughout the event, including a 24-point effort and averaged 14.6 PPG across three contests. She can create shots at all levels, sees the court well on the move and is balanced and poised in her play from the backcourt. As she continues to add strength to her frame, she has tremendous amount of upside in the class.
Isabella Slate 2030 / 5’10 / SF / Columbus North
We saw Bella a few times during the club season and obviously thought a lot of her game to extend an invite, but she probably exceeded our expectations as much as any frosh at AIS. She is long, fluid, and showed a ton of versatility on both ends of the floor. She scored the ball at high level, including a point 20 game, and played with nice energy and poise on both ends of the floor. North brings back five of their top seven players and some nice depth but would expect Bella to compete for some varsity time this season.
Maddie Smalligan 2030 / 5’10 / PG / HSE
Maddie has as much upside as any player in the class and was one of the most consistent and productive frosh at the showcase. She has nice wiry length from the guard spot, shows high level athleticism and skill in all parts of her game and is aggressive and confident in her approach for a youngster. She can handle as a lead, scores the ball in a variety of ways and is a versatile playmaker with her combination of length, agility and skill. She will be in the Royal’s varsity rotation right away which tells you a lot about the incoming freshman’s game.
Katelyn Tofani 2030 / 5’8 / CG / Lawrence Central
We have seen a lot of Katelyn over the last year, and she certainly doesn’t play or look like an incoming freshman. She has a strong high school ready guard frame, is athletic and versatile in all areas of her game and has instincts and feel for the action beyond her years. She is balanced between her attacks and jumpers, can score it in a variety of ways and has playmaking tools on both ends of the floor. She is poised and confident in her play for a youngster and is consistently efficient and productive in our views. Expect she will be part of the 4A Bears rotation early on.
