The IGBRR 4A #14 Carmel Greyhounds traveled to IGBRR 4A #13 HSE Royals for a Friday afternoon Hamilton county match-up in the radiational post thanksgiving contest. The Greyhounds continue to be without the services of 2022 Miss Basketball candidate Kate Clarke, while HSE are also missing their leading returning scorer Ryan Viele. The Royals would also be without the service of versatile junior forward Teagan Acres as well. The guest would get out of the gate quick on a 9-1 run, on their way to building a 21-6 lead. The Greyhounds would dominate the points in the paint early, despite junior center Mackenzie Thomas picking up her second foul at the 3:37 mark of the opening quarter. The Royals would take advantage of Thomas’s foul troubles, who picked up her third early in the second, and answered with 18-4 run across the end of the first into the second to pull back within a point at 25-24. The Greyhounds would finish the half with a Laura Valiente three pointer to stretch the lead to 36-28 at the break. Senior forward Emily Roper led the Greyhounds in the first half with 12 points, while freshman Maya Makalusky had 11 points for the host Royals. Both teams would score nine points in the third quarter and Mackenzie Thomas would pick up her 4th foul with 2:04 left in the frame and the Greyhounds would take a 45-37 advantage into the fourth with their leading scorer back on the bench. Neither team would score until the 4:24 mark of the final frame when Carmel took a ten point lead and from there the frenzy was on. The Royals would use a 14-4 run over the next three minutes to draw even with 1:30 to play 51-51. HSE would then take their first lead of the game with 50 seconds left and draw it out to four points and appeared to have the game in hand. With a two point lead and the ball with just 7 seconds remaining the Royals connected on a baseball pass press breaker to Olivia Brown who had to choose between an uncontested layup or trying to run the clock out. She chose the latter and was immediately fouled. Missing the front end of the one-one, senior Laura Valiente was able to go the length of the floor uncontested and connect on a runner at the buzzer to send the game to OT 55-55. The Royals would build their lead to 64-57 in OT and once again appear to be in control as Carmel junior Hannah Lach would be the second Greyhound to foul out. However, the Greyhounds would continue nipping at the lead over the final two minutes and a huge three pointer from reserve Ava Carter with thirty seconds left would pull the Hounds within a single point at 67-66. Another bucket from Mackenzie Thomas with seven seconds remaining would give the Greyhounds a 68-67 lead and road win as HSE was unable to get a shot off the in the final seconds. Despite foul trouble throughout and spending time on the bench, junior center Mackenzie Thomas had a game high 24 points for the Hounds and was dominant in the paint. Fellow frontcourt mate Emily Roper added 18 points. Junior Riley Makalusky led HSE with 23 points. The Greyhounds (2-3) will visit Lawrence North in a conference matchup on Tuesday, while HSE (5-3) host Noblesville in a conference matchup on Wednesday.
