The Hoops Classic championship game was an early preview between two 3A undefeated ranked teams that will be battling for a conference and sectional title later this year. IGBRR 3A #2 Benton Central Bison and the IGBRR 3A #13 Twin Lakes Indians both won their first two games in the Lafayette area tournament to meet in Saturday’s championship. The first quarter saw the two teams feel each other out in a slow methodical quarter of play that had the Bison ahead 6-5. In the second frame Twin Lakes freshman guard Addison Bowsman scored the first six points, which included a four-point play, to give the Indians a 11-6 advantage. Limiting the Bison to just twelve field goal attempts in the first half the Indians took their largest lead to the locker room at 17-11. After training 22-16, Benton Central would regain the lead again with 2:30 left in the third quarter and would use that 12-2 run to head into the final eight minutes of the championship match up with a 28-24 lead.  The Bison ran out to their biggest advantage of the contest at 37-30 but on multiple occasions the Indians pulled within a possession but could never draw even as senior Kennedy Tolen would hit free throws down the stretch to secure a 44-37 Hoops Classic Championship for Benton Central. After shooting no free throws in the first half, Benton Central was 15 of 22 in the second half to help triple their first half output. Tourney MVP Kennedy Tolen paced the Bison with a game high 24 points and 10 rebounds, while both Addison Bowsman and Addison Ward had 12 each for the runner-up Indians. Also to be noted was the defensive play of Benton Central PG Tressa Senesac who limited the shooting attempts of Twin Lakes sharpshooter Olivia Nickerson, while also adding 10 points. The conference re-match will take place December 14th at Twin Lakes. Benton Central (5-0) will travel to North Newton on Monday and Twin Lakes (6-1) will be idle until Saturday when they host Tri-Central.
